a little googling reveals the culprit to be max herman:
http://www.geocities.com/maxherman_2000/hell.html
googles cache of the same page:

max herman was an annoyance on the rhizome list back in 99/00 or so.
i don't recall ever having any exchanges with him,
so i have no idea why he picked my work to rip off.
(tho to be fair, he's also ripping off some of lias director pieces as
well.
& he removed the pieces i asked him to remove & replaced them with
links to the old nato 0+55 site, as if trying to pass that work off as
his as well.)
he's even been using exact emails i sent out 4 or 5 years ago to
promote this opsin.org thing.
what's strange is that according to google he's been doing this for
over a year now on various mailing lists, but very quietly & under the
radar.
so knowing his character, yes - it's a hoax.
as to motive, i have no idea & could care less.
it's clearly coming from a position of cynicism & manipulation
the exact opposite of what i do.
