INVITATION: CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS

As part of this years BIGblip we are holding 2 public workshops.
There is space for a maximum of 10 people for each workshop. Please
contact alicee at sussex.ac.uk for further info and registration.

Workshop 1 Robotics

what: Robotics workshop with Bill Bigge and Paul Granjon (http://
www.zprod.org)

This 2 days workshop is aimed at individuals interested in making
robots. The participants are not expected to have prior knowledge of
electronics, engineering or programming. Hands-on enthusiasm and
curiosity are what matters. At the end of the session the
participants will have gained skills that will enable them to
continue developing their personal robotics project. The techniques
covered are solar powered small robots and principles of control and
interface using a microcontroller (see past workshops at http://
www.zprod.org/zLab/workshopsFrame.html). Participants are invited to
express which technique they are interested in prior to the workshop.

when: Weds 26th and Thurs 27th Oct. 11am - 5pm
where: Fringe Gallery. Kensington St. Brighton
cost: £10

what you should bring: Necessary tools and parts will be provided,
however please bring old toys etc for recycling to give your robot
the edge...

Workshop 2 Interfacing Sound: Creative programming for performance
and composition

what: Creating digital instruments with Thor Magnusson (http://
www.ixi-software.net)

This 3 day workshop is aimed at encouraging individuals to make their
own software environments for musical performance and composition.
The aim is to explore alternative ways to interface sound with
graphics, hardware controllers or sensors. The focus of the workshop
will be adapted to suit the preferences of the group but will
generally include examination of open source audio programming
environments such as Pure Data and SuperCollider and environments for
fast graphics prototyping such as Python or Processing. We will also
explore how gamepads and joysticks can be hacked to serve as a good
input devices for connecting sensors or alternative controllers. An
integral part of the workshop is a discussion of aesthetics/ theory
of generative art and hands-on exploration of how these softwares can
extended acoustic instruments (expect to improvise!).

when: Weds 26th, Thurs 27th and Fri 28th. 11am - 6pm
where: Lighthouse, Middle St. Brighton.
cost: £10
