For a program to be considered an "author" it would have to take moral responsibility for its productions, i.e. be conscious and engage in productive dialogue and collaboration with others. Above all, be conscious.

While I think that in future artificial beings may be capable of this, I do not think that computer programs will ever be capable of it.

I've, intentionally, been staying out of this conversation because,  
although I am working on a generative music-based project, I do not  
consider myself to be and expert in the field. I  do, though and  
based on Antoine's comment below have a request:

Define "author".

I am struggling with the answer to this question, based on the  
project I'm about to undertake - so any assistance you could provide  
would be, greatly, appreciated.
