Someone already suggested Python and I'd like to second that. I've used
C++, Java and Python to generate audio and video, and in all cases I
found Python to give the best results: simpler and smaller programs,
faster development (especially the interpreter is usefull to prototype
stuff), quick turnaround/tuning and more stability.

For Max or PD, have a look at py/pyext externals http://grrrr.org/ext/py/
