Zuse and more recently Wolfram (who doesn't acknowledge Zuse, but has prettier
pictures) have argued that the universe is discretely computable.

We could be shape grammars or wavelet systems. Douglas Hofstadter 
believes he is
a strange loop, and who am I to disagree? :-)
